A presidential visit, NASA's first woman shuttle commander and plenty of sunshine were among the highlights that helped the 1999 New York State Fair achieve a new attendance record of 959,408 during its 12-day run, which ended Monday. The old record was 882,079.
Attendance also was helped by this year's grandstand show featuring pop stars Britney Spears and 98 Degrees, who drew 17,059.
The state fair nearly broke the attendance record last year. It was 16,185 people short when a violent Labor Day storm struck overnight before the final day, killing two people and forcing the fair to close early.
