Tiffany Nicole Hammonds, who would have turned 17 next Sunday, died Wednesday (Sept. 1, 1999) of respiratory failure at her home in Buffalo.
Her family remembered her Saturday as an inspiration to all who knew her. Her bright, warm smile and her strong, no-nonsense personality were just two of the characteristics that made "Tiff" so loved and respected, they said.
They said her strength and determination were evident in her pursuit of academic excellence as she battled a lifelong illness, defied "doctors' negative diagnoses" and maintained and "gave hope to others when things seemed hopeless."
She attended Buffalo Public Schools' Lorraine Academy, School 84 and Buffalo Vocational Technical Center, where she was to begin her senior year this week.
Survivors include her mother, Delores Marie Austin, and her father, James Aubrey Hammonds; three sisters, Tara Asher, Tonya McClerkin and Idasha Hammonds; two brothers, Jevone Hammonds of Buffalo and Eric Hammonds of Tennessee; and her grandmother, Juanita Austin of Lynchburg, Va.
Services will be held at noon Wednesday in Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 400 Northampton St. Interment will be in Concordia Cemetery.
