Getting there: The Boar's Head Inn is just west of Charlottesville, Va. From Interstate 64, take Exit 118-B, U.S. 29 North. Go 1.5 miles to U.S. 250. At the end of the off-ramp, turn left. The Boar's Head is about a mile on the left.
Lodging: The Boar's Head Inn, with 173 guest rooms, offers in-season rates of $179 to $189 for standard, double rooms between April 1 and Nov. 30. The rest of the year, the rate drops to $165 to $175. Rooms with a view of the lake are an additional $20. Rooms with fireplaces are $219 year-round, and suites run $350 to $400 year-round.
Other nearby hotels include the Omni in downtown Charlottesville and the Holiday Inn near the Fifth Street exit off Interstate 64. There are also several bed-and-breakfast inns in Charlottesville.
Dining: The Old Mill Room is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It lives up to its reputation for excellent food and service. Entrees change from season to season. The summer menu included fish, seafood, lamb, pork and veal. Dinner entrees ranged from $18.25 to $27.50.
Charlottesville has a wide variety of restaurants, ranging from fast food to fine dining. For dinner there's the C & O Restaurant on Water Street, the Clifton Inn off U.S. 250 East and Claiborne's in Charlottesville's downtown mall. For lunch, Hamilton's in the downtown mall and the Hardware Store are good choices.
Things to do: The Boar's Head Inn has an 18-hole golf course, 20 tennis courts (some indoor), a doubles squash court, three outdoor pools and a spa. Hot-air ballooning is offered most days at sunrise and sometimes in the evening. Nearby there are skiing, horseback riding and indoor ice skating.
Nearby historic sites include Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello; 215-year-old Michie Tavern; the University of Virginia; and the homes of presidents James Madison and James Monroe. For shopping, there's Charlottesville's downtown mall.
