GRANTS AIMED TO HELP STUDENTS REACH COLLEGE

President Clinton said Saturday that he has released $120 million in grants to help schools across the country prepare students and their families for college.

The money will fund the federal government's "Gear Up" program to help students prepare for higher education entrance exams and parents pay for college and university studies.

"These programs can make all the difference in whether a young person goes to college," Clinton said in his weekly radio address.

"I ask Congress to fully fund my request to double our commitment to these (education) programs now so that we can reach more of our children than ever," he said.
