Assemblyman Robert A. Daly, R-Niagara Falls, has appointed County Legislator Samuel P. Granieri to serve as coordinator of the Power Relicensing Task Force.
Granieri, R-Niagara Falls, works part time as Daly's district office liaison.
Daly created the task force earlier this year to study the process leading to the 2007 renewal of the New York Power Authority's license to operate the Robert Moses Power Plant in Lewiston. The application process for the new 50-year license has drawn the attention of local officials who want to use it to ensure lower electric rates.
Daly said he hopes the task force will serve to unify local governments and agencies behind the effort to play a role in the relicensing process.
Granieri has taken an interest in energy issues, sponsoring successful efforts to involve Niagara County in a multicounty natural gas purchasing group, which he said has saved the county about $75,000 so far.
He also introduced legislation to activate the county's municipal electric agency, created in the early 1980s but which exists only on paper. That resolution never got out of committee, however.
