I want to make a simple constructive suggestion to all sides of the Peace Bridge debate. We could use the present bridge by making these additions and modifications:
Get the trucks coming in the United States off the bridge immediately by sending them down the ramp and over the Skyway to the Port Authority warehouse on Fuhrmann Boulevard. Have Customs inspect and clear them at this location.
Increase the number of Customs agents so more or all booths are open on both the U.S. and Canadian sides.
Adopt a marketing and publicity campaign to inform the public and commercial carriers on both sides of the border that going through Customs on the Peace Bridge is now a friendly, efficient and prompt process.
These steps will eliminate a majority of the congestion issues and eliminate the need for a twin or signature bridge, saving millions of dollars in construction and legal fees.
The bottom line is to ensure that cross-border commerce continues. The Peace Bridge is important to the vitality of both Fort Erie and Buffalo. I believe my suggestions will help both sides attain this goal.
