Cardinal John O'Connor, hospitalized at a cancer center for diagnosis of an unknown ailment, says his fate remains in the hands of God.
"Life is such a gift and after almost 80 years of living it, I have no sentiment so strong as gratitude," O'Connor wrote in his weekly Catholic New York newsletter.
"But faith is an equal gift, most particularly the faith to believe that one's life, everyone's life, is ultimately in the hands of a loving God."
O'Connor, 79, has been hospitalized since Aug. 25 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
The nature of O'Connor's ailment is unclear. He said he would release results of tests when he receives them.
The cardinal has announced plans to retire as head of the New York Roman Catholic archdiocese when he turns 80 on Jan. 15.
