A North Tonawanda funeral director apparently drowned in the waters near Smith Boys Marina Friday evening, city police said.
Ward Wattengel, 52, of Daniel Drive, owner of the Wattengel Funeral Home on Oliver Street, went to the marina to drive his boat to a Buffalo restaurant, to meet his wife and children.
When he failed to arrive, his children went to the dock at about 6:45 p.m., found his car in the parking lot, his boat still docked and personal belongings sitting on the dock, according to Lt. Randy Szukala.
Wattengel apparently entered the water after unplugging the power to his boat, police said. He never boarded his boat.
Members of the North Tonawanda Dive Team recovered Wattengel's body at 7:55 p.m., approximately 81 feet from his dock and in about 18 feet of water. An autopsy will be performed today; there were no apparent signs of struggle or foul play at the scene, Szukala said.
