F. Gibbs Kerns, 52, an attorney and former mayor of Westfield, died Thursday (Sept. 2, 1999) in his Westfield home after a brief illness.

A native of Westfield, he graduated from Westfield Academy and Central School Class of 1964 and earned a bachelor of science degree in history from Allegheny College in 1968. He received his law degree from the University of Buffalo School of Law in 1973.

He served as a military police dispatcher in the Army in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971.

Kerns was admitted to the Bar in Rochester in 1978 and was an assistant Chautauqua County Attorney before opening his practice in Westfield. He was mayor of Westfield from 1985 to 1987 and was a member and former president of the Chautauqua County Bar Association.

He was a member and served as secretary and president of the Lake Shore Railway Historical Society of North East, Pa., and belonged to the Loyal Order of Moose 118 in Westfield. He also was a past president of the Westfield Kiwanis Club.

His wife, the former Celeste Nelson, survives.
