John D. Maurer of the Town of Tonawanda, a retired employee of Sylvania and the state Department of Transportation, died Wednesday (Sept. 1, 1999) in Kenmore Mercy Hospital. He was 72.
Born in Buffalo, he was a 1944 graduate of South Park High School, where he played varsity football, basketball and baseball.
After serving in the Army during World War II, he graduated in 1950 from the University of Buffalo School of Management.
Maurer worked in the purchasing department at Sylvania Electronics until 1972, then went to the DOT, where he worked in the real estate division until he retired in 1989.
In 1958, he moved to the Town of Tonawanda, where he was a Democratic committeeman. He also was active in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society.
He enjoyed fishing and golf.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, the former Mary Elizabeth Masterson; two daughters, Ellen Balon of Williamsville and Elizabeth Ludwig of East Amherst; a sister, Hilda Turner of San Jose, Calif.; and three granddaughters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:45 a.m. Saturday in St. John the Baptist Church, 1085 Englewood Ave., after prayers at 9:15 in C. Mertz and Son Funeral Home, 911 Englewood Ave., Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
