A police officer fatally shot a man in Harlem on Wednesday after the victim allegedly tried to cheat a cab driver out of the fare he owed for a ride from jail. It was the second fatal police shooting this week, and appeared to be accidental.
The officer's gun apparently went off while he was trying to pull the victim out of a cab.
The victim had been released from custody on a drug charge Wednesday morning and took a cab back to the neighborhood where he had been arrested, police said. After the man skipped out on his taxi fare, the cab driver gave police a description of the suspect, and an officer stopped him on the street about 20 minutes later.
The two talked briefly, and the suspect fled with several officers chasing. He then jumped head first into the open passenger window of a livery cab, which was stopped at a red light.
One of the officers opened the cab door and began to pull the suspect out by his legs when his gun fired once, Taylor said.
