CHURCH BELLS ringing for six minutes starting at 11 a.m. today at Catholic churches in Western New York's Polonia (Polish American community) remind people of the horror and terror launched upon the Polish people 60 years ago when their land was invaded by Adolf Hitler's Nazi troops.
The invasion marked the begining of World War II. By the time the Germans were through ravaging the country, Poland alone lost 6 million citizens -- 3 million Christians and 3 million Jews.
It was a war that has had repercussions until this very day upon the lives of many people, according to Joseph J. Macielag, president of the Western New York Division of the Polish American Congress.
He said the church bells ring for six minutes -- a minute for each decade -- as a reminder of the suffering that began that day. . . .
