POPE REPORTEDLY WILL VISIT SADDAM ON MIDEAST TRIP

Pope John Paul II will meet Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who has been ostracized by many nations since the 1991 gulf war, when the pontiff travels to Iraq on a religious visit in December, the World Jewish Congress said Tuesday.

A Vatican spokesman declined to comment.

But the Jewish group said one of its top officials learned of the meeting during recent discussions with the Vatican on the pope's plans to visit historic Biblical sites in the Middle East, including Israel, Egypt and Syria.

The group said it was told the pope plans to visit Iraq from Dec. 2 to 5.
