Cleanup work has begun at the ARO Corp. hazardous- waste site in Cheektowaga, where soil contaminated with industrial solvents is being treated and ground-water extraction wells are being installed.
The project, designed by a consultant for Ingersoll-Rand Co., uses systems of wells to treat both the soil and water. A soil-vapor extraction system is used to vacuum the volatile chemicals from the soil, and chemical separation techniques are used to purify the water.
Well drilling has begun, and installation of the systems should be complete early next year. The site is located at 3695 Broadway, Cheektowaga.
