Four Buffalo middle school students were winners in an essay contest sponsored by Bell Atlantic in conjunction with USA Luge.

Heather Wagner, 12, was one of seven essayists in the "Win at School" contest to earn a trip this winter to Lake Placid, where she will visit the training center for USA Luge.

Adam Ertel, 12, Joseph Ramos, 13, and Angela Smith, 12, earned $200 U.S. Savings Bonds for their essays. The program is designed to teach youngsters about values such dedication and discipline through exposure to athletes on the USA Luge team.

BASKETBALL: Teams are wanted for a Sunday evening open league starting Nov. 16 at Center Court Sports, 2912 William St., Cheektowaga. Call 897-1935.

FLOOR HOCKEY: Cruisers Sports Complex in Niagara Falls needs teams for Saturday (18-over) and Sunday (21-over) leagues. Players ages 7-13 may also sign up for a Saturday morning league. Call 283-0339.

SKATING: "Learn to Skate" and figure classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays begin Nov. 17 at Niagara University's Ice Complex. Call 636-7401.

SOCCER: A Sunday morning recreational league for ages 7-13 is forming at Cruisers Sports Complex in Niagara Falls. Call 283-0339.
