BUILDER'S REQUEST FOR EXCEPTION TO SUBDIVISION RULE REJECTED

Citing "bad planning," the Grand Island Planning Board Monday night denied a builder's application for an exception to town subdivision regulations.

The board rejected the application of Szur Builders Inc. for an exception to the regulations on access to and from subdivisions at the end of Meadow Lane between 1212 and 1200 Whitehaven Road.

Planning Board Chairman Thomas Nowak said the Szur exception would allow for only a single means of access to 30 existing houses on Meadow Lane and would land-lock a prospective 40 more.

He said allowing for any less than two ways in and out of the area "is bad planning."

One way in and out could result in a potentially dangerous situation in an emergency, he added.

Representatives of the builder defended the plan as posing no threat to residents.

However, board members Shirley Schultz, David Eberl and Lavern Luther agreed with Nowak and voted to deny the application.

Member Frank Greco voted for approval, and John Trianda abstained.

The board approved an amended site plan for Bible Presbyterian Church at 1780 Love Road, involving a fence line with neighboring residences.

The issue had been held over from a previous meeting because of lack of a quorum.

The Planning Board recommendations, among others Monday night, were referred to the Town Board for final action.
