The Genesee County Legislature Wednesday narrowly approved an increase in salaries for legislators and non-union department heads.
By a vote of 5 to 4, lawmakers approved boosting the salary of eight legislators from $5,600 to $9,500. The chairman will be paid $12,500, up from the present $9,000.
Department heads and supervisors will receive an increase of 2.5 percent in 1998.
Stipends for committee attendance by legislators -- previously $40 per meeting -- would be eliminated under the new schedule, which takes effect Jan. 1.
