Pearl Hishen, 99, a retired nursing assistant, died Monday (Oct. 6, 1997) in the Riverwood Health Care Center, Grand Island, where she had lived since 1993.
She was born in Pennsylvania and lived in foster homes until she became independent at the age of 16.
She and her late husband, Frank, who died in 1963, met as co-workers while working in a home for developmentally disabled children in Pennsylvania. They married in 1931, and moved back to his hometown of Niagara Falls in 1940. They lived on 13th Street.
Mrs. Hishen worked in the kitchens of the former Hotel Converse and former Hotel Niagara in the 1940s and 1950s. Her last job before her retirement at age 75 was as a nursing assistant in the former Ransom House Nursing home in Niagara Falls.
She enjoyed bingo and embroidery.
She is survived by a dear friend, Mary Eliah of Niagara Falls.
Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in the M.J. Colucci and Son Funeral Chapel, 468 19th St., Niagara Falls.
