LONG ISLAND PLANT FIRE FORCES EVACUATION OF AREA

Fears that a fire at a milk bottling plant may have released harmful chemicals into the air forced the evacuation of several buildings near the factory late Tuesday night, Suffolk County fire and police officials said.

The fire at the Oak Tree Dairy began at about 11:02 p.m., said police spokesman Sonny Di Stefano. Firefighters declared it under control about five hours later, said a dispatcher at the Greenlawn Fire Department.

Four police officers were treated at Huntington Hospital for smoke inhalation and released, said Officer Renee Hauser, a police spokeswoman.
