Car dealer and former Utah House speaker Robert Garff was named chairman of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee and Mayor Deedee Corradini was picked to head the committee that will stage the 2002 Winter Olympics. The appointments were made by Gov. Mike Leavitt.
Garff replaces Frank Joklik, the longtime chairman.
His appointment caps off changes in leadership that began with the July resignation of president Tom Welch following charges of spousal abuse. Public sentiment toward the games turned over the $1 million severance and consultant's package Welch received.
