A bus filled with Moroccan passengers toppled off a bridge at a highway intersection today and fell some 50 feet onto a road below, killing at least 12 people, officials said.
Rescue squads were trying to extricate passengers from the mangled wreckage two hours after the accident on a highway north of this Mediterranean port city.
It was not immediately known why the bus veered off the road, toppling onto a highway below. It apparently was en route to Italy.
Helicopters flew over the site of the wreck on the A7 highway between Marseille and Lyon, which was temporarily closed.
