The grave of the Rev. Nelson Baker, a candidate for sainthood and one of the most beloved figures in the Buffalo area, has been desecrated, police said.
A vandal used a can of black spray paint to write an obscene message on the large tombstone in Holy Cross Cemetery in Lackawanna, Detective Capt. Thomas Brooks said.
The vandalism, discovered by women praying at the grave, occurred between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday. Anyone with information should contact Lackawanna police at 822-4900.
Stone Art Memorial is treating the stone in hopes of saving it.
Father Baker founded the Baker Victory complex and was instrumental in building Our Lady of Victory Basilica.
