The companies which have completed the cleanup of the former waste processing site operated by Frontier Chemical Waste Inc. on Townline Road near Beach Ridge Road will sponsor an open house and tours of the site from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday.

The Frontier-Pendleton site was operated as a licensed facility to treat industrial waste from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. After Frontier Chemical failed to comply with state orders to clean up the site, the companies that are sponsoring the open house formed the Pendleton Group and agreed to work with the state Department of Environmental Conservation on a cleanup.

The 18 industrial companies that admitted they were responsible for the contamination agreed to pay for the cleanup at a cost of more than
$16 million.

The operation resulted in contamination of the soil and ground water south of Quarry Lake and in lake sediments,
according to the DEC.
