A young Western New York woman died today after being thrown from the back seat of a compact car that struck a sign on the mainline Thruway in Lackawanna, state police said. The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and unsafe lane change.
The identity of the woman, one of three people in the car, was withheld, pending notification of her relatives, according to troopers.
The one-car crash occurred at 4:45 a.m. when the driver lost control of his eastbound vehicle and swerved into a metal beam supporting a Thruway sign about a half-mile west of the Lackawanna toll barrier, authorities said.
The identity of the driver, who was scheduled to be arraigned in Lackawanna City Court, also was withheld. He and the other passenger suffered minor injuries, police said.
