A baby delivered by Caesarean section a half-hour after his mother was killed by a runaway car died Tuesday in Maimonides Medical Center.
Within minutes of the infant's death, police arrested the car's driver on two counts of manslaughter.
The condition of the 6-pound 14-ounce child, born Monday, deteriorated throughout the night because of severe internal bleeding, said Pamela Brier, a hospital administrator.
On Tuesday afternoon, the father, Anthony Crupi, asked the hospital to remove his son from life support, Ms. Brier said. He planned to have the boy buried with his mother, she added.
Carol Crupi, 36, was walking her 4-year-old daughter, Nicole, to preschool in Bensonhurst when a car jumped the curb and struck them. Ms. Crupi, who was eight months pregnant, was dead on arrival at Maimonides; Nicole suffered a broken leg.
The driver of the car, Angel Ocasio, 74, was charged with manslaughter and assault in the wounding of the surviving daughter.
