George F. Laettner Sr., who served with the Buffalo Fire Department for 33 years, died Sunday (Oct. 27, 1996) in Millard Fillmore Hospital.
Laettner, 80, formerly of Cheektowaga, served many years with Hook and Ladder 2 and later was with Ladder 16 before retiring in 1976.
He was a member of Fire Fighters Local 797.
In 1952, he received the Edward H. Butler Silver Medal Award for two acts of bravery. He carried a man down a ladder from a fire on North Division Street on Feb. 3, 1951, and rescued a child from a fire at Delaware Avenue and Allen Street on April 1, 1951.
A longtime member of the Triad Fishing Club, Laettner enjoyed day trips along the waterfront, gardening, dancing and golf.
He attended St. Valentine's School and the former Technical High School.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, the former Sophie Beutel; a daughter, Irene Laettner-Zawadzki of Petersburg, Mich.; three sons, George Jr. of Angola, James of East Amherst and Francis of Lackawanna; four brothers, Edward, Leon, Frank of Amherst and Anthony of Clarence; two sisters, Catherine Laettner and Rita Doherty; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph's Cathedral, 50 Franklin St. Burial will be in St. Matthew's Cemetery, West Seneca.
