CITY TAKES HONORS IN CROSS COUNTRY

Over the long run, there's just no beating City Honors.

The Centaurs claimed boys' and girls' cross country championships yet again Monday at the Buffalo Public Schools' All-High Meet at Delaware Park.

Leigh Mesler ran 2 1/2 miles in 17:04 to lead City Honors to a 1-2-3 finish in the girls meet. The Centaurs, undefeated over 10 seasons, easily outdistanced runner-up Hutch-Tech, 19-46.

In the boy's race, Colin Dauria led a pack of Centaurs that captured the 4-8 spots in a race won by Marlon Wagstaff of Buffalo Arts. City Honors had 30 points, Hutch-Tech 97.

FIELD HOCKEY: Jill Barry scored one goal and assisted on another as Starpoint avenged last season's sectional field hockey loss to Pioneer by defeating the Panthers, 3-1, in the Class B quarterfinals. Nikki Sidebottom and Janelle Joseph also scored for Starpoint (13-4-1).

GIRLS SOCCER: Renee Harpster scored two goals -- bringing her season total to 52 -- as Holy Angels beat Mt. Mercy, 4-2, in the Msgr. Martin Assn. semifinals. Julie Scaffidi and Erin Shirley also scored for the Angels (16-1), who move on to play Nordin (14-3) in Wednesday's final. Nardin topped Mt. St. Mary's, 2-0, behind goals from Jackie and Marie D'Orazio and 14 saves from Jill Gorman.
