What made 11 men worthy of inclusion on GQ's "Men of the Year" list?

"We catch ourselves humming his melodies on the subway, mentally replaying his fourth quarter, dreaming about the characters he's conjured with his pen," GQ wrote by way of introducing the "Men of the Year" in its November issue. "Only then do we realize that his name . . . is no longer just a proper noun. It's a symbol now."

The list, based on a poll of readers, has winners in 11 categories:

Sports -- Michael Jordan; TV Entertainment -- Jerry Seinfeld; Most Stylish Man in America -- Pat Riley; Art and Architecture -- I.M. Pei; Fashion -- Giorgio Armani; Literature -- Norman Mailer; Music -- Darius Rucker; Business -- Bill Gates; TV News -- Tom Brokaw; Humanitarianism -- former President Jimmy Carter; Film -- Mel Gibson.
