Michael Gervasio, 98, known for many years as "Mr. Sunshine" in his East Lovejoy neighborhood because of his efforts to give children in that area an opportunity to go the former Crystal Beach, Ont., amusement park, died Tuesday (Oct. 22, 1996) in Millard Fillmore Hospital after a brief illness.
Gervasio had been a resident of East Lovejoy for more than 64 years.
As a Prudential Insurance Co. agent, he garnered many top sales awards and was well known to residents in the Lovejoy area.
Born in Naples, Italy, he immigrated to the United States to live with relatives in 1913.
He lived in the Trenton, N.J., and Philadelphia areas before moving to Buffalo. He moved to Lancaster in 1977.
He was a 40-year active member of the East Lovejoy Business and Taxpayers Association and served as its treasurer for many years. As chairman of the association's Crystal Beach Day Committee, he actively recruited neighborhood youth, who otherwise would not have an opportunity to visit the popular amusement park across the border.
Gervasio was a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and an usher at the church for 54 years.
Surviving are two sons, John of Lancaster and Thomas of Cheektowaga; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
