Emma I. Brese, 85, of Amherst, active in Lutheran Church affairs, died Wednesday (Oct. 23, 1996) in Niagara Lutheran Home after a brief illness.

Born Emma Farchmin in Buffalo, she attended Fosdick-Masten High School and Hurst Private School. She worked for seven years at the former Laub Tannery on Clinton Street and as bookkeeper for her husband Erwin's plumbing and heating business, Erv's Plumbing, until he retired in 1972. She had been an Amherst resident for more than 60 years.

She was a charter member of Amherst Lutheran Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. She also was secretary for many years of the local branch of the Aid Association for Lutherans and a member of the Lutheran Service Society's Auxiliary and was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She also was secretary for the auxiliary of the Plumbing Contractors Association of New York State.

She and her husband celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September 1994.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, the Rev. Erwin Jr., pastor of Grace Lutheran Church of Niagara Falls; David of Durham, N.C., and James of the Town of Tonawanda; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandsons.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Amherst Lutheran Church, 5125 Main St. at Lafayette Boulevard. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Armor.
