IF MASIELLO HAD LISTENED, WE WOULDN'T NEED USER FEE

Relative to Mayor Masiello's plan to impose a user fee and, effectively, double-tax us for garbage collection, he would not feel compelled to impose such a user fee if he had not gratuitously abandoned the "bed-tax" litigation against the County of Erie, in which the City of Buffalo stood to recover several million dollars (at a minimum) from the county and he had not foolishly tabled my administration's dismissal motions in the school-desegregation case and backed himself into a position where the Federal Court could and did order the city to pay the school district millions over a period of years as, essentially, ransom to get out from under federal court supervision in the school-desegregation case.

Had Mayor Masiello simply followed my administration's lead in these matters instead of unthinkingly rejecting everything "Griffin" out of hand, it would not now be scrounging for money at the expense of city taxpayers, money that those city residents who are living on fixed incomes in their own homes cannot afford to pay.

James D. Griffin Former Mayor
