Amy Burda and Candi Sims had 12 kills apiece and Somer Deschambault collected 36 assists as the University at Buffalo edged Canisius Saturday in a four-game women's volleyball marathon.
The Royals triumphed, 14-16, 16-14, 16-14, 18-16, to improve to 13-12. For Canisius (8-14), Tammy Richley had 12 kills and 24 blocks while Amy Light added 16 digs.
In SUNYAC West pool play, Fredonia State, led by Jen Jentz, won matches against Oswego, Utica/Rome and Brockport. Jentz had six kills against Oswego and five against Utica/Rome.
Buffalo State went 1-2 in pool play, beating Utica/Rome behind eight kills apiece from Colleen Zaranek and Debbie Taylor.
St. Bonaventure dropped matches to LaSalle (four games) and Temple (three games). Nikki Renninger had 18 kills against LaSalle.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Buffalo State finished seventh at the SUNYAC championships. The top finisher for the Bengals was Frank Bogdan (West Seneca East), who placed 12th . . . Erie Community College got an eighth-place finish from Ben Hollander (Lake Shore) and a 12th-place finish from Michael Filliman (Pioneer) at the Morrisville Invitational. The Kats were third out of five schools. . . . UB was third at the Albany Invitational as Chris Keenan (West Seneca East) placed eighth overall and Pat Nolan (Timon/St. Jude) was 11th.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Lynn Lambright (Clarence) was sixth as Buffalo State finished third at the SUNYAC championships in Plattsburgh. . . . ECC's Tracy Weimer (West Seneca East) was eighth and Danielle Hopp (Depew) placed 16th at the Morrisville Invite.
MEN'S SOCCER: Sophomore Adam Lonergan scored twice to power Canisius to a 5-2 Metro Atlantic victory over Siena. Matt Kiechle, Charlie Williams and Tony Burke also scored for the Griffs (4-8-1 overall, 3-1-1 conference). . . . Fredonia State blitzed Cortland, 5-0, to improved to 14-1 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC. Tom Cordaro (Clarence) scored twice for the Blue Devils, while Jad Donaldson picked up his eighth shutout. . . . Rich Paige scored with one second remaining to give Buffalo State a 4-3 victory over Oswego State. . . . John Booz scored an unassisted goal with 2:42 left in regulation, lifting Erie Community College over Corning CC, 1-0. John Mackey made 10 saves for the shutout as the Kats improved to 8-6-1 overall and 7-3-1 in Region III.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Freshman Linda Hughes set a school record by scoring five first-half goals as Niagara blasted Siena, 5-1, for its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season. Freshman netminder Susan Klick made 10 saves for the winners (4-8-1, 1-3-1). . . . UB (6-5-3) got a goal from Kathleen Magner in a 2-1 loss to Eastern Michigan.
MEN'S SWIMMING: St. Bonaventure opened its season with a 155-70 loss to visiting Syracuse. Freshman George Eversmann had a strong debut for the Bonnies, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle by almost 12 seconds in 9:54.75. He was also third in the 500 free.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING: Kelly Hogan won the 50 free (24.97) and the 100 free (53.16), but St. Bonaventure fell to Syracuse, 135-108, in its season-opener.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Kara Armstrong (Sweet Home) and Robin Rocchio (Nardin) won at singles and teamed up for a win at doubles to power Canisius over Cleveland State, 7-0.
MEN'S TENNIS: St. Bonaventure opened its Atlantic 10 Conference schedule with 4-3 victories over Xavier and Dayton. Bona's J.P. Gingras remained unbeaten with a pair of straight-set victories.
