I had no trouble with the Bills calling a pass play on first-and-goal against the Dolphins. What I did have trouble with is the type of play, a straight drop-back. The call should have been for a rollout with a run-pass option.
And therein lies the trouble with the Bills and Jim Kelly. Because Jim can't run, the option wasn't an option. Look at the replay. The left side was wide open. Todd Collins could have made it, either by design or by scrambling.
Of course, the opposing teams also know Jim can't run. Their pass rushers don't have to worry about containment, nor do the backs.
I like and admire Jim Kelly. He is one of the best things that happened to Buffalo football. I don't question his intensity, competitiveness, or leadership abilities. But he can't run and he can't run from that fact.
