The Buffalo Gladiators overcame wind, rain and the Kokomo (Ind.) Mustangs Saturday night to reach the Mid-Continental Football League championship game.
Buffalo bolted to a 12-0 lead and held on for a 12-6 semifinal victory before about 750 fans at Lewiston-Porter High School. The Gladiators (12-0) will host the championship game against the Southern Michigan Timberwolves of Monroe, Mich. (12-0) at a site to be determined on Nov. 2.
Southern Michigan scored a 31-14 victory over the defending MCFL champion Racine Raiders (11-1) Saturday night at Horlick Field in Racine, Wis.
Fullback Ken Canzoneri scored the Gladiators' first touchdown on a 1-yard run in the first quarter, then quarterback John Augustine Jr. fired a 30-yard scoring pass to Manning Brown in the fourth quarter.
"It was almost impossible to throw the football because of the conditions," Augustine said. "But our defense kept us in good shape all night by forcing four turnovers. The defense really played well."
Kokomo, which finished 9-3, scored its touchdown with about three minutes left.
