A man said to be an employee of Buffalo's Water Department was injured Friday afternoon when a wall collapsed in the hole in which he was working, sources said.
Karl Hawthorn, described as a foreman, remained in the emergency room in Erie County Medical Center late Friday. A hospital spokesman said Hawthorn's injuries were under evaluation, and his condition was not available.
The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. on a job site on Clinton Street, west of Jefferson Avenue. The Buffalo Fire Department confirmed that it was summoned to an industrial accident at that site at about that time.
A source said Hawthorn was working in a hole that was about 10 feet deep. Repairs were under way on a 36-inch water line when one of the walls, which a source said was improperly shored, collapsed and trapped Hawthorn.
Co-workers reportedly dug Hawthorn out.
