PHONE CABLES CUT IN JAMESTOWN

JAMESTOWN -- An accidental cut into a telephone trunk line Friday morning left hundreds of area residents unable to dial outside of their exchange or to call for emergency services.

The cable was cut on East Second Street near Stow Street just after 10 a.m. As a result, ALLTEL Corp. service center supervisor Vernon Craven said there were service interruptions on the east side of Jamestown and in Falconer, Kennedy, Steamburg, Ellington and Randolph.

Crews were able to restore some service by late afternoon, but others could dial only within their exchange for more than eight hours.

Crews were on standby at volunteer fire stations to receive emergency calls, since customers were not able to dial through to the 911 system during the outage.
