A man driving a stolen van is accused of breaking into seven vehicles early Friday in a Delaware Avenue parking lot before leading Cold Spring Station officers on a high-speed chase that ended with a crash.

George Bell, 39, of no permanent address, was arrested by Officers Benny Crespo and James Sorrentino on charges of reckless endangerment, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, criminal trespass, two counts of criminal possession of stolen property and six counts of criminal mischief.

After stealing the van at about 4 a.m. from a driveway on St. Paul Street, police said, Bell allegedly drove to a fenced-in parking lot at an apartment building at Delaware and Hodge Street where he broke windows on seven vehicles and took small items including a stereo, watch, pager and coins.

The officers spotted Bell who led them on a chase at more than 70 mph from Delaware to the 100 block of Landon Street where the van crashed into a tree after Bell jumped from it while it was still moving, police said. Bell took off on foot and was taken into custody on Ellicott Street.
