MAN LINKS GORGE JUMP TO REBUFF BY CANADA

A man found seriously injured early Wednesday near the base of the American Falls apparently jumped 150 feet into the Niagara River Gorge on purpose, State Park Police said
Thursday.

The man, interviewed at Erie County Medical Center, identified himself as Asmael El-Mourad, 28, of Canada and stated he jumped into the gorge because he could not get back into his own country, Canada, Sgt. Al Bielmeier said.

El-Mourad said he entered the United States about 10 days ago to visit relatives in Ohio, but upon his return, Canadian Customs officials would not let him back into the country because he had no identification on him, Bielmeier said.

El-Mourad said he was so upset over the situation that he jumped into the gorge, landing on the blacktop pathway used by the Cave of the Winds tour, police said.

Police said the matter is under investigation and Canadian authorities have been notified of the man's statement. Police said El-Mourad did not always appear to be lucid while he was being interviewed.
