More than two-dozen people staged a rally on police brutality outside Cheektowaga Police Headquarters on Union Road Wednesday morning.
Loretta L. Renford, a co-founder of the grass-roots group Concerned Citizens Against Police Abuse, organized the rally Monday on the fourth anniversary of the death of Donald T. Fleming.
Fleming died Oct. 16, 1992, in Cheektowaga Police Headquarters while being booked on charges in a robbery at Airport Plaza.
Ms. Renford's group has been fighting to draw more attention to alleged police abuse cases in Buffalo and across Erie County.
Three pathologists determined Fleming died after he suffered complications brought on by sickle cell anemia. Police were cleared of any wrongdoing after a state investigation.
But Fleming's family still maintains he was abused while in custody and felt police failed to give him proper medical attention when he collapsed in headquarters.
