STOCKS, BONDS HEAD LOWER IN MIDDAY TRADING

Stocks were lower this morning as signs of slightly higher inflation sent interest rates rising in the bond market.

At noon the Dow Jones industrial average was down 25.71 at 5,979.07.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about a 7-to-5 margin on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 195.94 million shares, down from 229.49 million in Tuesday's noontime trading.

Bonds fell after a report showing that consumer prices rose 0.3 percent in September.

Overseas, Tokyo's Nikkei stock average fell 0.2 percent. In afternoon trading, Frankfurt's DAX index was down 0.5 percent and London's FT-SE 100 fell 0.6 percent.
