COUNTY MONITORS INDIAN LAND CASE

Erie County Attorney Kenneth Schoetz is in Washington, D.C., today to monitor arguments before the Supreme Court in an Indian land claim case, Idaho vs. Couer d'Alene Tribe, which is expected to have an impact on the Seneca Nation's claim on Grand Island.

The case, which follows last spring's Supreme Court decision that Indian nations can not sue states in federal court, will see the justices decide whether to extend that prohibition to state officials as well.

If the high court rules in favor of Idaho, it would affect the status of many Indian land claims across the country. Proceedings in the Seneca Nation lawsuit for the return of Grand Island have been stayed pending a decision in the Idaho case, which is expected next spring.
