Mattel Inc., the parent of Fisher Price Toys in East Aurora, said its third-quarter earnings rose a better-than-expected 11 percent. Mattel's net income rose to $168 million, or 61 cents a share, from $151.3 million, or 53 cents, a year earlier. Sales rose 4.2 percent to $1.23 billion from $1.18 billion.
Corning Inc. said third-quarter earnings rose 13 percent to $95.2 million, or 63 cents a share, from pro forma results of $84.3 million, or 38 cents, a year ago. Revenue rose 9.1 percent to $910.2 million from $834.5 million. Year-ago figures are restated to conform with a calendar year ended Dec. 31.
Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. earned $331 million, or $1.69 per share, on revenues of $6.20 billion in the quarter ended Sept. 27. A year earlier the company earned $300 million, or $1.47 per share, on revenues of $5.43 billion.
Paine Webber Group Inc. earned $80.16 million, or 79 cents per share, on revenues of $1.375 billion in the quarter. A year earlier the company earned $78.19 million, or 71 cents per share, on revenues of $1.379 billion.
Canandaigua Wine Co. said it earned $4.94 million, or 25 cents a share, in the second quarter ended Aug. 31, 1996, compared with earnings of $10.06 million, or 50 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier. Revenue was $279.22 million compared with $229.29 million.
Chase Manhattan Corp. said its earnings in the third quarter rose to $858 million, up 12 percent from $764 million in the same period of 1995. Chase said its earnings were equal to $1.80 a share, compared with $1.58 a share a year earlier.
Gannett Co. Inc., owner of the Niagara Gazette, reported third-quarter earnings of $414.7 million, or $2.94 a share, compared with $96.1 million, or 69 cents a share, a year ago. Earnings in the latest quarter included a one-time, after-tax cash gain of $294.6 million from the August sale of its outdoor advertising business. Without the sale, third quarter earnings would have increased 28 percent to $115.3 million. Revenue for the quarter increased 29 percent to $1.12 billion from $864.9 million a year ago.
Ameritech Corp. said its third-quarter earnings jumped 12 percent to $519 million, or 94 cents a share, from $464 million, or 84 cents a share, in the same period last year. Revenue for the quarter ended Sept. 30 rose 10 percent to $3.72 billion from $3.38 billion a year ago.
