Sir Dirk Bogarde is recovering from a stroke he suffered after an operation to improve his circulation.

The veteran British actor was hospitalized four weeks ago for the operation, his nephew Brock van den Bogaerde said today.

Bogarde is best-known for his brooding performance as the aging homosexual in a 1970 film version of "Death in Venice." He also has published several novels and seven volumes of his autobiography.

He was knighted in 1992.
