The body of a young woman was found early today stuffed inside a suitcase in a garbage dumpster outside an East Delavan Avenue delicatessen, homicide police said.
A store clerk at 1266 E. Delavan Ave. spotted the suitcase as he was placing trash in the dumpster at about 12:50 a.m.
"He was putting garbage inside the dumpster and saw the suitcase. He opened it up and saw the body and called us," said Lt. William P. Conwall, assistant chief of homicide.
The woman died of trauma, detectives said. But because of a lack of blood at the scene, authorities believe she had been killed at another location. They estimated she had been inside the black suitcase at least eight hours before the discovery.
"She was not dismembered," Conwall said. "She was just crammed into the suitcase, a standard size suitcase, roughly 30 inches long and 24 inches high. She weighs about 120 pounds and is about 5 feet 2 to 4 inches tall. I'd say she's either in her teens or early 20s."
