A woman accused of stealing $2,505 in public assistance money and food stamps from the local welfare program was arrested Tuesday, police said.
Latasha D. Melton, 39, of 328 10th St. was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, misuse of food stamps and offering a false instrument for filing, police said.
Ms. Melton is accused of applying for and receiving $1,489 in public assistance money and $1,016 in food stamps from March 1 through Oct. 5 from the Niagara County Social Services Department without notifying authorities about the income she was received working for the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, police said.
Ms. Melton pleaded innocent Tuesday in City Court and was granted an adjournment to Oct. 24. Her bail was set at $1,500.
