What do you do with a rust-streaked Chinese ship seized from immigrant smugglers? Sink it, grow a reef and put the word out to scuba divers around the world.
That's what this British colony has in store for the Xing Da, a Canton-registered cargo ship that limped into Bermudan waters Oct. 7 under U.S. Marine and Coast Guard escort, after an undercover American agent foiled a plot to land 89 would-be Chinese immigrants in Massachusetts.
The Coast Guard flew the 109 passengers and crew to the American Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Wednesday, leaving the ship anchored off the coast of this Atlantic island.
"The ship will be of enormous benefit to Bermuda," Home Affairs Minister Quinton Edness said. He said experts would be used to ensure that the project does not harm the environment.
