Mante Elizabeth Theophilatos Abbott, 74, of Amherst, retired director of grants at Canisius College, died Saturday (Oct. 12, 1996) in Beechwood Nursing Home in Getzville after a brief illness.

Born in London, England, Mrs. Abbott was a graduate of the Godolphin and Latymer School for Girls in London.

She received a bachelor of arts degree from Florida State University and worked in New York City as an editorial assistant for the London Daily Mail before moving to Buffalo in 1952 with her husband, Samuel, who died in 1992.

Mrs. Abbott was a homemaker until 1965, when she began her career in university administration at the University at Buffalo.

She received a master's degree in library science from UB before moving to Canisius College as director of grants services. She retired from Canisius in 1987.

She had been a member of the Buffalo Racquet Club, Amherst Ladies Golf League and the Buffalo Canoe Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Melita Weikinger of Amherst and Elizabeth Abbott of Ithaca; two sons, Timothy of Amherst and Jeremy of the Town of Tonawanda; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the West Chapel at John E. Roberts Funeral Home, 1357 Hertel Ave.[hdkns]
