I am a one-family homeowner generating approximately 10 pounds of garbage a week. A double-family home would generate at least twice my total. My user fee is $141; the double fee is $169 for the same service. Should the double fee be $282? The user fee is a disparity foisted on us by the Common Council.
If the charge is truly a user fee, all parties should pay the same fee, whether or not they are property owners. Based on the established fee, single-family owners are subsidizing double owners. Also, double-family owners enjoy the luxury of passing the cost to their tenants.
The logic used by our city fathers in preparing the user fee is difficult to accept. However, it should be applied on an equal basis. This aberrant user fee is far from being fair.
