Undercover agents used fake doctors' notes to buy marijuana at a Los Angeles club that claims it sold the drug only to people who could prove they had AIDS, cancer or other terminal illnesses.
Dennis Peron, founder of the Cannabis Buyers Club, was arrested Friday on charges of conspiracy and possession and sale of marijuana.
The state attorney general's office charges Peron sold marijuana to drug peddlers and people without medical problems.
Prosecutors said the club openly sold the illegal drug since 1991, operating from a storefront on a busy street and claiming 11,000 members. Members insisted they had rigid restrictions and required proof of a patient's medical condition to sell marijuana.
But the indictment says undercover agents obtained marijuana with faked doctors' notes recommending the drug as treatment.
