GRAND ISLAND

Republican Supervisor James H. Pax was re-elected, polling 2,793 votes to 2,050 for challenger James R. Sharpe, running as an independent.

A four-way race for two Town Board seats saw Republican Richard W. Crawford Jr. the top vote-getter with 3,353 votes, according to complete but unofficial returns, and incumbent Democrat Gail J. Lazenby with 3,037, just two votes ahead of Republican newcomer Andrea L. Moreau, with 3,035. The close race resulted in a call for impounding of the ballots and a recount. Incumbent Democratic councilwoman Marion P. Fabiano trailed with 2,428.

Sharpe, a Republican councilman, retains his seat on the Town Board.

Incumbent Republican Town Justice Francis B. Pritchard won re-election in a bitter contest with Democrat Sandra K. Styka, 3,533 to 2,816.

Town Clerk Nancy J. Samrany was re-elected, defeating Republican challenger Nancy L. Gorrell, 3,516 to 2,488.

Tax receiver Marlene L. McCarthy was unopposed.
